The Miseducation of Brown Girls

About The Miseducation of Brown Girls Summit

One of our flagship initiatives, The Miseducation of Brown Girls, is a one-day summit and summer enrichment program designed to provide Black and Brown girls ages 10-18 with the educational tools and community-building experiences necessary for success beyond the classroom.

Rooted in civic engagement and leadership development, this transformative experience fosters confidence, critical thinking, and self-advocacy, ensuring that every participant leaves with the skills to shape their future and uplift their communities.

Each year, The Miseducation of Brown Girls is shaped by the voices of our participants, who vote on the topics that matter most to them. Past themes have included Brown Girls in Media, The College Process, and The School System & Resources, ensuring that each summit reflects the real experiences and needs of Black and Brown girls.

The Pandemic Pivot

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we turned the summit into a three week summer camp to support critical social-emotional learning (SEL) to students during an unprecedented time of isolation and uncertainty. In 2020, we served over 80 girls across 14 cities and three countries, offering a space for connection, growth, and empowerment through virtual programming. Recognizing the increasing need for support, we expanded our reach in 2021, doubling our impact by introducing more virtual, year-round programming. This expansion allowed the organization to engage with more students. It extended its global footprint, welcoming participants from additional countries, including a student from the Philippines!

TODAY… many of the scholars you’ll see in the videos below have grown through middle and high school with The Dinner Table Doc, matriculating into our programs as ambassadors, junior board members, and interns—continuing their journey of leadership and empowerment.
